When I was in the 8th grade I had to read 700 pages from books every term.
This was a lot from a girl was never very good at reading and consequently hated it.
So in my young girl logic I thought reading two big books would be better then reading a bunch of dumb small books, I don't know why looking back.
I tried to read the first book in The Work and the Glory series.
I didn't even get half way through with it before I gave up and decided to lie on my list for that term.
The next term was the same story with the second book.
The third term I recommitted myself and decided no matter what I would finish.
I did!
And I fell in love.
Joshua was my favorite character.
I loved how he had a past (a past that I really didn't know a lot about since I didn't read the first two and probably wouldn't have made him my favorite had I known).
And I loved Caroline, of course.
Anyway, these books as I grew up, changed my life.
Mark laughs at me cause I say that a lot about things, but this one really did.
At that time in my life I was hanging out with bad friends and I really hated going to church and I had a very negative outlook on life.
Once I started reading these books, I realized that I shouldn't hang out with those friends anymore and spent my spare time alone a lot but I was reading so it wasn't too bad.
I became more positive in life and towards my family
And I realized that the church was true (that also had to do with the fact that I was reading the Book of Mormon, but the W.A.T.G. helped give me a testimony of Joseph Smith and church history).
After book three which is still my favorite, I never lied on my reading list again and I usually doubled the required pages.
Well I've decided to start reading them again.
I love them even more now then I did before.
In someways I start to question my testimony.
Reading about Joseph's revelation and how the Book of Mormon came to pass again stirred some weird feelings.
It all sounds TOO fantastic, TOO good to be true.
But Gerald Lund does such an amazing job of describing everything (if you can't tell, I love long descriptions) and making you feel like you are right there that you start to feel the same spirit that the characters must have felt.
Now I know that the Steeds are fictional but everything that happened around them was true and really the Steeds are just a tool for the real church history to be shared.
Anyway, If any of you are in need of a new book and an amazing pick me up, READ THESE BOOKS!
I wouldn't suggest watching the films instead of reading; the first film is pretty close to the book but the other two have things going on that never happened, it's almost a completely different story line when it comes to the Steeds, although the church history is still correct.
Anyway, read them, you wont regret it.
This is a picture of Joshua and Caroline from the third movie.
This movie is by far the furthest from the book out of the three movies but I still love the actors chosen for the roles.
They are perfect for the parts and I now have a visual of the characters as I read.
